What is Salmon fish called in Telugu language?

Salmon fish available in India is called as Maaga (మాగ) and Budatha Maaga (బుడత మాగ) in Telugu language. Even though both fall under the same category, a little difference is seen between Maaga and Budatha Maaga fishes. While the big sized Salmon fishes are called as Maaga, small sized Salmon fishes are called as Budatha Maaga. When compared, Maaga fishes are much tastier than Budatha Maaga fishes.

How did Salmon fish get it’s name in Telugu language?

Salmon fish has derived it’s name from Maagha Maasam (మాఘ మాసం), a Telugu month name. Salmon fish available during this Maagha Maasam month tastes much better. There is an old tradition in some villages regarding Salmon fishes and Maagha Maasam. Some rich families and village heads throw a big lunch party during Maagha Maasam with Maaga and Budatha Maaga fish varities as main dishes.

According to Vizag Fisheries and exporters, Salmon fish is exported under 8 varities from Vizag port alone. Apart from Vizag, Salmon fish is exported heavily from Kolkata, Mangalore and Chennai harbours. In general, all the Salmon fish varities exported from Indian harbours are termed as Indian Salmon Fish in abroad countries.
